Applications Engineer - Tucson, AZ

Position Summary

AOM is looking for a bright, energetic technical Applications Engineer to interface with customers and internal engineering staff to guide development of custom metrology solutions.  An Applications Engineer at AOM is the primary technical liaison between internal engineering teams and the customer.  Learn about the basics of CGH design and become an expert in the application of CGH metrology to asphere and freeform optical testing, subsystem testing, and general interferometry applications.  Use that knowledge to guide internal teams and customers to metrology solutions that best suit the needs of the application, considering technical requirements, cost, and schedule constraints.

 

Essential Functions

  • Develop proficiency in understanding and modeling diffractive optics and optical test configurations in Zemax
  • Interface with new and existing customers to capture optical testing requirements for CGH metrology applications and educate customers on capabilities and products that are available from AOM
  • Pre-sales support – perform preliminary test design to inform customers of CGH test feasibility, test configuration and expected cost
  • Post-sales support – perform training and assist customers with complex test setups and alignment of CGH tests where required
  • Participate in internal product development projects as the customer advocate, advise technical teams of requirements for products and features that keep usability and other customer-centric requirements in mind
  • Generate documentation for deployment of metrology solutions, develop technical sales & marketing collateral for products and features to highlight their uses and benefits to potential customers, where needed follow up with customer training and collaboration through virtual or on-site meetings
  • Travel up to 20-30% expected, primarily domestic but occasional international travel may be required

Qualifications

  • Required
    • Bachelor’s degree in physical sciences such as optics, physics or electrical engineering
    • Experience with Zemax optical modeling software and willingness to learn new modeling and design concepts
    • Experience in engineering, applications engineering, technical sales, or product development
    • Highly motivated and capable of independent direction, problem solving, and troubleshooting
    • Desire to work in a hands-on environment with hardware and optics and an understanding of basic lab tools
    • Strong technical writing ability and effective communication verbal and written communication skills
    • Detail oriented and organized
  • Desired
    • Master’s degree in physical sciences or Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering
    • Experience working with opto-mechanical hardware in an engineering lab environment
    • Experience with interferometry and optical testing, optical surface specification and GD&T
    • Experience in direct customer support in a technical and commercial capacity
    • Experience writing Python scripting

Position Summary

AOM is hiring a bright, energetic mechanical engineer to join the team developing custom metrology solutions that include precision optics and mechanics.  The Mechanical Engineer position at AOM is a member of a cross-disciplinary team working to design, build, and test custom metrology equipment for use in alignment and manufacturing of optical components and systems.  The successful candidate will be a key technical contributor participating in requirements analysis, concept generation, material selection, trade studies, preliminary and final design, documentation, assembly and integration manufacturing, and testing.  This is an ideal position for an early-career candidate as we expect the successful engineer will develop expertise in the following:

Essential Functions

  • Design and detailing a variety of mechanical and opto-mechanical assemblies
  • Interfacing with machine shops and other fabrication vendors to source mechanical components
  • Assembling and testing mechanical system prototypes
  • Developing, documenting, and updating manufacturing instructions
  • Supporting manufacturing team to troubleshoot problems and increase operational efficiency

Qualifications

  • Required
    • Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
    • Working knowledge of 3D CAD modeling software
    • Working knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods
    • Works well within an interdisciplinary team
    • Desire to work in a hands-on environment with an understanding of basic shop and lab tools
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Detail oriented and organized
  • Desired
    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Opto-Mechanical Engineering
    • Proficient in SolidWorks CAD modeling software
    • Understanding of GD&T principles
