- Computer Generated Holograms (CGHs) enabling interferometric surface testing of optical surfaces – aspheres, freeforms, cylinders, conic sections, and many other complex surface shapes
- Mechanics for alignment of CGHs and test optics
- Engineering services for development of complete optical test setups, including unique alignment features for relating mechanical datums to optical references
Position Summary
AOM is hiring a bright, energetic mechanical engineer to join the team developing custom metrology solutions that include precision optics and mechanics. The Mechanical Engineer position at AOM is a member of a cross-disciplinary team working to design, build, and test custom metrology equipment for use in alignment and manufacturing of optical components and systems. The successful candidate will be a key technical contributor participating in requirements analysis, concept generation, material selection, trade studies, preliminary and final design, documentation, assembly and integration manufacturing, and testing. This is an ideal position for an early-career candidate as we expect the successful engineer will develop expertise in the following:
Essential Functions
- Design and detailing a variety of mechanical and opto-mechanical assemblies
- Interfacing with machine shops and other fabrication vendors to source mechanical components
- Assembling and testing mechanical system prototypes
- Developing, documenting, and updating manufacturing instructions
- Supporting manufacturing team to troubleshoot problems and increase operational efficiency
Qualifications
- Required
- Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD modeling software
- Working knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods
- Works well within an interdisciplinary team
- Desire to work in a hands-on environment with an understanding of basic shop and lab tools
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Detail oriented and organized

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Opto-Mechanical Engineering
- Proficient in SolidWorks CAD modeling software
- Understanding of GD&T principles
- Experience designing, building, and testing opto-mechanical assemblies
- Experience with design for manufacturing
- Basic knowledge of optical metrology techniques such as interferometry

- Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, clean room, or production floor
- May be asked to use optical cleaning chemicals like acetone and alcohol in a safe manner
- Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, and occasionally lift or carry up to 35 lbs
