Optical Engineer - Tucson, AZ

Position Summary

AOM is hiring a bright, energetic optical engineer to join the team developing custom metrology solutions that include computer modeling, interferometry, and precision mechanics.  This is an ideal position for an early-career candidate, the successful engineer will have the opportunity to develop expertise in the following:

Essential Functions

  • Optical modeling in Zemax, including macros and linking extensions
  • Computer programming in a combination of Matlab, C, Java, and Python
  • Interferometric optical testing, including test setups, precision alignment, making measurements, and data reduction
  • Precision inspection and metrology, including designing fixtures, CMM programming, and data reduction
  • Design within cost and schedule constraints

Qualifications

  • Required
    • B.S. in Optical Engineering
    • 2+ Years practical experience in related field
    • Experience using optical design software, specifically optimization and tolerancing
  • Desired
    • M.S. or PhD in Optical Engineering
    • 5+ Years practical experience in related field
    • Strong programming skills

Software Engineer - Tucson, AZ

Position Summary

AOM is looking for a bright, energetic Software Engineer to join the team developing custom metrology solutions that include computer modeling, interferometry, data processing, and statistical analysis. The Software Engineer is a technical expert, designer, developer, project manager, team member, and customer advocate, who provides leadership for the development, distribution, and support of AOM software tools and applications. The Software Engineer interfaces with other AOM scientists and engineers as well as our valued customers to understand and document requirements and use cases leading to robust, efficient, and scalable software tools and applications.

Essential Functions:

  • Improve existing software tools by understanding metrology application and optical design processes, studying current production software solutions, and identifying opportunities to increase program efficiency and speed
  • Develop new software solutions by studying information needs, conferring with users (internal and external), and studying systems flow, data usage, and work processes
  • Investigate problem areas in software and processes
  • Follow the software development lifecycle
  • Improve operations by conducting systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures
  • Protect operations by keeping information confidential

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Proficiency in Java or C++ required
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or Python preferred
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience serving as technical lead throughout the full software development lifecycle, from conception, architecture definition, detailed design, scoping, planning, implementation, testing to documentation, delivery and maintenance is preferred

Optical Technician - Tucson, AZ

Position Summary

The Optical Technician position at AOM is a member of a cross-disciplinary team that builds and tests standard and custom metrology equipment for use in alignment and manufacturing of optical components and systems.  The successful candidate will provide assembly support in manufacture of optical and mechanical assemblies, manufacturing documentation, process development, and other duties as needed.

The candidate must have strong ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Essential Functions

  • Maintenance and operation of clean facilities for R&D and production of optical assemblies
  • Handling, aligning, cleaning, and bonding sensitive optical components
  • Operation of precision metrology equipment including interferometer, surface profiler, and CMM
  • Operation of software and writing reports for data analysis
  • Operation of standard machine tools and metrology for making simple metal parts

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required. 2-year or 4-year degree in hands-on technical field desired.
  • 2 years relevant employment with extensive hands-on experience with optics
  • Willingness and ability to learn software for instrument control and data analysis
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Desired skills: CAD design software experience, advanced machining skills, experience cutting, grinding and polishing glass, and computer programming.
